SUMMARY:The Big Plastic Count
DESCRIPTION:A campaign by Greenpeace. \n\nCount your plastic for one week – 16-22 May 2022. \nAcross the country\, households of all shapes and sizes\, schools\, community groups and businesses\, will gather new evidence. How much plastic are we really having to throw away\, and what happens to it? \nWe’ll show the government it’s time to commit: reduce single plastic use by 50% by 2025 by switching to reusable options that work for everyone – and ban sending our waste to other countries. \n\nMore information here \n

DESCRIPTION:A campaign by Plantlife \nBasically\, we don’t mow our lawns (or even a patch of lawn) throughout May\, and then do a flower count of the unmown area at the end of the month. They have been doing this for some years now – simple to do\, but it provides valuable information and gives small plants a chance to flower and provide a source of nectar for bees and other insects. \nMore information here

SUMMARY:Nature Walk: The Stone House\, Stapleford
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a nature walk with a difference!  Following on our visit to The Stone House last month Patricia Mirrlees has kindly invited us to walk round her garden.  Tree identification will be the focus of the walk\, looking at leaves\, bark and overall appearance.  A a recent count\, 35 different types of tree were identified in the garden! \nAs usual\, John O’Boyle will lead the walk which starts at 2 pm and will last for about an hour.  It is free; and no need to book – just turn up on the day.  This is a garden walk\, but  we nevertheless advise stout footwear and long trousers; the walk is at participants’ own risk. \nThe Stone House is at 40 MIngle Lane\, opposite the church.  We hope people will walk or cycle\, but if coming by car\, you should be able to park on Gog Magog Way.  Assemble just before 2 pm at the entrance to The Stone House.

SUMMARY:Face to face conversation in a Stapleford garden
DESCRIPTION:  \nWE ARE CORDIALLY INVITED to join Stapleford resident Patricia Mirrlees for a drink and a chat at her home The Stone House\, 40 Mingle Lane\, from 6.30 – 8.00 pm on Wednesday 25 August.  This will be a social occasion at which we can get to know each other\, but we shall also be discussing green issues.  Patricia is particularly interested in how we can work to improve our local environment for wildlife and biodiversity\, be it (for example) by getting councils to reduce verge cutting and allowing grass to grow and planting wildflowers instead; making life easier for insects\, bees and butterflies by planting nectar rich flowers and seldom mowing lawns; and for animals like hedgehogs creating highways by making gaps in garden fences.  Other issues we might discuss are the water crisis or the recent IPCC report – but let’s see where the conversation leads us.  It will be such a luxury not to have a set agenda to work through at speed! \n  \nIf coming by car\, park near the Johnson Hall on Gog Magog Way – the entrance to The Stone House is opposite the church lych gate.  The Stone House has a large garden\, and we shall sit outside.  Patricia will serve soft drinks and tea/coffee. \n  \nWe hope lots of us will be there!  If you can come\, please contact us at the usual address – greengroupssss@gmail.com.  Please let us know by Monday 23 August so Patricia knows how many to expect.

SUMMARY:2G3S Nature Walk at Stapleford Chalk Pit
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to join our next nature walk at Stapleford Parish Pit on Saturday 24th July from 2-3pm. \nStapleford Chalk Pit is a small nature reserve adjoining Magog Downs.   A group of Friends have worked to improve the rich grassland flora and associated wildlife.   The pit was formed by the extraction of a hard chalk (clunch) to be used for building material and the repair of local roads. \n70 wildflower species have been recorded on the site and several species of butterfly. \nTo access the site\, park in the Magog Trust car park and walk back down the road towards Stapleford.   After 200 yards there is a signpost to the Pit on the left\, just after the Gog Magog Cottages private road.   Walk up the path and go through the gate at the top.   Note there is a parking charge to non-members of the Magog Downs if you decide to drive. \nSturdy footwear is advised and sun protection/water as appropriate.   Note these walks are intended to raise awareness of our local wildlife sites and open to all\, though you attend at your own risk. \nFurther details of the Pit can be seen here \nJohn O’Boyle

SUMMARY:How to pay for better bus services?
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Zoom (free) \n\n \nEdward Leigh \nfrom Smarter Cambridge Transport \n  \nFew people would disagree that we need better rural bus services. Franchising (re-regulation)\, which would make it easier to provide an integrated\, consistent service\, is now an option in Cambridgeshire.  But to expand service provision significantly will require additional money.  So\, the key question is\, where do we get the money from? \n  \nSmarter Cambridge Transport is an apolitical\, voluntary organisation\, advancing integrated\, sustainable and equitable transport for the Cambridge region. \n  \nAll welcome! \n  \n*To be sent the Zoom link\, email greengroupssss@gmail.com \nwith the header line Bus Services. \n\n \n

SUMMARY:The Cambridge Nature Network
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n \nThe Cambridge Nature Network \nThursday 11 March 8  pm by Zoom* \nJames Littlewood\, CEO of Cambridge Past\, Present and Future \nTo reverse the local decline in biodiversity\, our nature sites need to be better\, bigger and more connected.  One way to achieve this is through a local nature recovery network and one is being proposed for Cambridge.  The Cambridge Nature Network is based on five priority areas for recovery\, including the Gog Magog Hills and River Cam Valley.  To be successful it will need the support of local communities\, local councils\, government agencies\, business\, landowners\, university colleges and charities.  Initial work is being progressed by local charities Cambridge Past\, Present & Future and Wildlife Trust BCN. \n  \nJames Littlewood is leading this work for CPPF\, with whom 2G3S have a strong relationship.  Wandlebury lies within Stapleford parish; 2G3S and CPPF hosted an Apple Day there in 2019.  After his talk James will answer questions both on the Cambridge Nature Network and more broadly about the work of CPPF itself. \n  \n* To take part\, email greengroupssss@gmail.com with the heading Cambridge Nature Network and you will be sent the link nearer the time. \n

SUMMARY:Transition Cambridge monthly 'Cafes': Doughnut Economics
DESCRIPTION:Transition Cambridge organises monthly cafes\, actual or virtual depending on the rules at the time\, with lively conversations\, talks\, presentations and films.  More details\, and the programme for future cafes\, here. \nThe next Cafe will be a discussion on Doughnut Economics. \nWednesday 17th June 2020 19:00-20:30 online\nContact Matt for the Zoom link. \nTransition demands a fresh narrative for our economic life. Oxford economist Kate Raworth has offered the Doughnut model for our enlightenment and Martin Roach will lead a discussion on how we could apply this in the Cambridge context. \nSince the neo-liberal narrative is so powerful and deeply rooted in western economies it is helpful to know that change is afoot at a high level. The Wellbeing Economy Governments (WeGo) are questioning the wisdom of growth culture and this ten minute TED talk by Nicola Sturgeon sets the scene for our Cafe evening. There is no obligation to watch the video but it can provide a helpful perspective. \nThis is a free event.
