SUMMARY:We Need to talk about Climate and Nature Action
DESCRIPTION:Great Shelford Library 2pm 26th February\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent organised by Cambridgeshire Libraries \nFree event\, but donations appreciated. \nThe theme of this workshop is “How to get started with individual climate action AND look after your wellbeing whilst doing so”. Led by an experienced facilitator\, Elisabeth Goodman-Spain. \nHuman-made climate change\, and associated impacts on nature and on our way of life are very real and very present. Yet\, this is still a subject that many people find difficult to face or talk about with those around them. It can be equally difficult to choose where to begin to take action\, let alone feel confident that such action will have sufficient impact. The net result can be isolating and overwhelming. This interactive seminar is an opportunity to air and hear your fears voiced with and by others\, through small group discussion and reflection in pairs and individually. It will enable you to explore how to begin positive action in a way that gives you meaning\, connects you with others and also nurtures your wellbeing. \nPlease book ahead in the library\, or contact: \nCambourne.referral@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Public Meeting on the CSET Busway (Better Ways for Busways)
DESCRIPTION:Better Ways for Busways (BW4B) are holding a public meeting at 19:30 on Tuesday 18th February at Great Shelford Memorial Hall\, Woollards Lane\, Great Shelford. CB22 5LZ. Everyone is welcome! \nIn January\, following approval by the County Council\, the GCP submitted their proposal to the Government to build their bus-only road (busway) through the green belt close to Stapleford\, the Shelfords and Sawston. The GCP busway proposal will now go to public enquiry where it will be examined in detail. \nThe scheme has been opposed by Stapleford Parish Council and a number of local organisations including the Magog Trust and Cambridge Past Present and Future. They are in favour of an alternative route for the busway that would be cheaper\, potentially more useful for village residents\, and have far less impact on our green spaces. There is more information on this alternative proposal on the Better Ways for BusWays website. \nAt the public meeting\, the CEO of Cambridge Past Present and Future (CPPF) will present the case for BW4B’s alternative busway route. \n2G3S encourages you to attend the meeting\, and voice your personal objection to the CGP scheme.  Objections must be submitted by 7th March. Please send in your objections to: www.bw4b.org/how-to-object \nDonations towards the costs of presenting the case are also welcomed. You can donate using the link on the CPPF website\, here.

SUMMARY:Discussion Evening-Perspectives on the Future of Personal Transport
DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on the Future of Personal Transport \nThis conversation evening is designed to be engaging and enjoyable. \nThere have been several trends in personal transport over the last few years and we will be concentrating on two of them. Both have an environmental impact. These two trends are coming together with the advent of electric cars. \nWe will start off with a short team quiz embracing the two trends so everyone has the same knowledge. The quiz will then broaden out into items for discussion. \nAt the end of the discussion\, we will examine some of the considerations for buying an electric vehicle\, and this will then lead to considerations of local infrastructure\, government policy and maybe\, if time permits\,  geopolitical impacts that will limit vehicle choices. \nIt is almost certain you will learn something about electrical vehicles\, their environmental impacts\, and possibly something about climate change including the two events in 1957 that really initiated the knowledge base we have built up today. \nSo you should come away better informed\, better able to weigh up pros and cons and have had an enjoyable experience. Does that sound worthwhile?  See you there!

SUMMARY:2G3S Book Club Thursday 24 November: Silent Spring
DESCRIPTION:Our next book/books are ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson / ‘Silent Spring Revisited’ by Conor Mark Jameson.  ‘Silent Spring’ needs no introduction; it was a seminal work when it was published in 1962 and was a major factor in the banning of DDT some years later.  The second book was published in 2012\, and focuses on what happened to particularly birds in the 50 years after Silent Spring was published. \nWe have been meeting in The Rose\, Stapleford\, but this pub is currently closed\, so we are meeting at The Three Horseshoes\, Church Street\, Stapleford.  We have booked their private room for 8 pm. \nDo come along having read both\, either\, or neither!  If you know you are coming\, please email us at greengroupssss@gmail.com so that we can contact you if necessary.  If you have decided at the last minute\, check the website first for any last minute amendments.

SUMMARY:Wednesday 2 November Strategic Planning meeting
DESCRIPTION:A message from our convenor\, Claire Lord \n  \nWatching the news this Summer I’ve seen reports of record breaking temperatures\, widespread drought\, horrific ‘mega’ wildfires and floods of truly tragic proportions. I’ve felt grief\, worry\, frustration and helplessness. \n  \nA large source of solace for me in these times is knowing that I am not alone in these feelings\, and there are things that I can do to help.  I joined 2G3S because I benefit from meeting other people who share my concerns\, and who can give me ideas of what I can do in my own home to live more sustainably.  I also enjoy joining with others to try and have a positive influence on a wider scale.  The benefit of synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. \n  \n2G3S is a friendly and informal group where visitors and new members are always welcome.  Sometimes people just come along because they are interested in a particular topic\, or would like to join in on a more regular basis. \n  \nIn November we are having a ‘Strategic Planning Meeting’ where we will discuss themes such as what issues we feel we should be working on as a group\, and how we are achieving our mission statement. From there we will brainstorm some ideas of what we would like to do next year. It is an open meeting and all are welcome\, even if you have never met us before! \n  \nSo\, if you fancy getting involved in a Repair Cafe\, discussing ideas on how to reduce single use plastic\, rewilding a garden\, planning a campaign or just listening in to the discussion – come along and join us and input your thoughts and ideas. \n  \nWe’re meeting on Wednesday 2nd November\, at 8pm in Cox’s Close Community Room\, Stapleford. Please email 2G3S (greengroupssss@gmail.com) to let us know if you are planning to come along or even if you would just like to send us some ideas! \n  \nClaire Lord

SUMMARY:Book Club Thursday 25 August
DESCRIPTION:In May we had an interesting discussion about ‘Doughnut Economics’ by Kate Raworth.  We have decided to meet quarterly\, and so our next meeting will be at The Rose\, Stapleford\, at 8 pm on 25 August. \nThe book we have chosen this time is not so much theory\, more one person’s account of how we can build a livable future for all in response to the climate crisis.  It is: \nA Bigger Picture: My Fight to Bring a New African Voice to the Climate Crisis \nand is written by Vanessa Nakate\, a climate activist from Uganda.  Vanessa has noted that African countries bear a disproportionate share of the problems occasioned by the climate crisis\, while at the same time black voices are not being heard as much as those of white activists.\n \n‘A Bigger Picture is part rousing manifesto and part poignant memoir\, and it presents a new vision for the climate movement based on resilience\, sustainability\, and genuine equity.’ (A Good Read)\n \nThe book has been recommended by Katie Williams\, who will lead the discussion.  Do come and join us at the meeting – having read the book is preferable but not compulsory; you might just want to find out about the ideas and join in the discussion. \n

SUMMARY:Strategic Planning Meeting Wednesday 6 July
DESCRIPTION:A few of us thought it might be useful to have a slightly different planning meeting next week to give us a chance to discuss what everyone’s priorities are for the group going forward\, and enable us to plan a bit further ahead.\n\nThe 2G3S mission statement (available on the website) is as follows:\n\n\n\n\n2G3S aims to promote a positive vision of a society that enhances\, rather than degrades\, the natural environment on which we all depend.  We hold events in our constituent villages and spread information to raise awareness of green issues and to show how we can work together\, both at an individual and at an organisational level\, to make changes to our way of life that will lead to a more stable and sustainable future. \n\nThe plan is to spend time in small groups brainstorming around the following questions:\n\n\n\nWhat do we think we should be doing to work towards our mission statement?\nWhat issues do you think are most important for 2G3S to focus on?\nWhat are our strengths as a group?\nWhat are our weaknesses?\nWhat other local groups are there working on environmental issues?\nWho can we influence in our local area (and beyond)?\n\n\nThe questions will be rotated around the groups so we all have a chance to think about them.\n\nThis will be followed by a discussion that will hopefully give us an idea of where to focus our energy going forwards.  Katie Williams\, who recently hosted the Workshop on Climate Justice\, has kindly offered to lead the evening.\n\n\n\n\nIt would be great if as many are able to attend as possible\, so we get a good depth and range of discussion.  If you are not able to attend but would like to contribute any thoughts please send them through by email (to greengroupssss@gmail.com)\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will probably work best in person\, but if anyone needs to link in via zoom please let us know (email as above).\n\n\nWe are meeting in Cox’s Close Community Room\, Stapleford\, CB2 5SP.  Refreshments will be available and we will start the evening at 8pm.

SUMMARY:Book Club 19 May
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the new 2G3S Book Club where we are going to be discussing books (and articles\, podcasts etc) with an environmental theme.  We are going to start with ‘Doughnut Economics’ by Kate Raworth and are meeting at The Rose\, Stapleford\, at 7.30 pm on Thursday 19 May. \nAll are welcome to come along and  join the discussion.  Ideally you will have read at least some of the book beforehand\, but if it is one of those books you have always meant to read but not got around to\, why not come along anyway and find out more about it?   You can just turn up on the day\, but it would help us to have an idea of numbers\, so if possible drop us a line (see below). \nYour ideas for future books will also be welcome.  We are currently considering\, among others\, ‘Climate Justice’ by Mary Robinson; ‘English Pastoral’ by James Rebanks; and ‘Wilding’ by Isabella Tree. \nThe group will probably meet quarterly. \nIf you are coming\, or would like to be involved but can’t make the meeting on 19th\, contact us at greengroupssss@gmail.com with the header line Book Club.
