SUMMARY:Nature Walk to Nine Wells Saturday 20th August
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n  \nYou are invited to join me for a walk around the Nine Wells nature reserve from 2 p.m. on 20th August to observe the interesting flora and fauna of this woodland site.  Nine Wells is of historic and geological importance as the chalk springs act as the source for Hobson’s Conduit and traditional water supply to Cambridge. \nAs before stout footwear is advised and also long trousers as a precaution against any nettle/brambles.  Sun protection is also advised if appropriate and water if it’s a hot day.  This walk will be at participants’ own risk. \nAssemble at the noticeboard at the western entrance to the reserve  (the one nearest the DNA path to Addenbrookes). \nNote: there is no car parking near to the site but it can be reached via a public footpath from Granham’s Road or the National Cycle Network path that runs between Shelford/Addenbrookes (the DNA path). \nFurther details of the reserve\, including location\, can be found at https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/nine-wells-local-nature-reserve \nJohn O’Boyle \n  \nFuture Walks \n17 September – Wale Field and woodland path\, Little Shelford \n15 October – Dernford Lake

SUMMARY:Strategic Planning Meeting Wednesday 6 July
DESCRIPTION:A few of us thought it might be useful to have a slightly different planning meeting next week to give us a chance to discuss what everyone’s priorities are for the group going forward\, and enable us to plan a bit further ahead.\n\nThe 2G3S mission statement (available on the website) is as follows:\n\n\n\n\n2G3S aims to promote a positive vision of a society that enhances\, rather than degrades\, the natural environment on which we all depend.  We hold events in our constituent villages and spread information to raise awareness of green issues and to show how we can work together\, both at an individual and at an organisational level\, to make changes to our way of life that will lead to a more stable and sustainable future. \n\nThe plan is to spend time in small groups brainstorming around the following questions:\n\n\n\nWhat do we think we should be doing to work towards our mission statement?\nWhat issues do you think are most important for 2G3S to focus on?\nWhat are our strengths as a group?\nWhat are our weaknesses?\nWhat other local groups are there working on environmental issues?\nWho can we influence in our local area (and beyond)?\n\n\nThe questions will be rotated around the groups so we all have a chance to think about them.\n\nThis will be followed by a discussion that will hopefully give us an idea of where to focus our energy going forwards.  Katie Williams\, who recently hosted the Workshop on Climate Justice\, has kindly offered to lead the evening.\n\n\n\n\nIt would be great if as many are able to attend as possible\, so we get a good depth and range of discussion.  If you are not able to attend but would like to contribute any thoughts please send them through by email (to greengroupssss@gmail.com)\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will probably work best in person\, but if anyone needs to link in via zoom please let us know (email as above).\n\n\nWe are meeting in Cox’s Close Community Room\, Stapleford\, CB2 5SP.  Refreshments will be available and we will start the evening at 8pm.

SUMMARY:Nature Walk - Stapleford Chalk Pit - 18 June
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin me for a walk at Stapleford Chalk Pit on Saturday 18 June – no need to book.  I shall lead the walk\, which is being hosted by the Magog Trust for the benefit of 2G3S. \nStapleford Chalk Pit is a small nature reserve adjoining Magog Downs.  Volunteers have worked to improve the rich grassland flora and associated wildlife.  The pit was formed by the extraction of a hard chalk (clunch) for used for building material and the repair of local roads.  70 wildflower species have been recorded on the site and several species of butterfly. \nTo access the site park in the Magog Trust car park and walk back down the roadside track towards Stapleford. After 200 yards there is a signpost to the Pit just after the Gog Magog Cottages private road. Walk up the path and go through the gate at the top for 2 pm. Note there is a parking charge to non-members of the Magog Downs if you decide to drive. \nSturdy footwear is advised and also long trousers as a precaution against any nettle/brambles. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the new 2G3S Book Club where we are going to be discussing books (and articles\, podcasts etc) with an environmental theme.  We are going to start with ‘Doughnut Economics’ by Kate Raworth and are meeting at The Rose\, Stapleford\, at 7.30 pm on Thursday 19 May. \nAll are welcome to come along and  join the discussion.  Ideally you will have read at least some of the book beforehand\, but if it is one of those books you have always meant to read but not got around to\, why not come along anyway and find out more about it?   You can just turn up on the day\, but it would help us to have an idea of numbers\, so if possible drop us a line (see below). \nYour ideas for future books will also be welcome.  We are currently considering\, among others\, ‘Climate Justice’ by Mary Robinson; ‘English Pastoral’ by James Rebanks; and ‘Wilding’ by Isabella Tree. \nThe group will probably meet quarterly. \nIf you are coming\, or would like to be involved but can’t make the meeting on 19th\, contact us at greengroupssss@gmail.com with the header line Book Club.

SUMMARY:Nature Walk: The Stone House\, Stapleford
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a nature walk with a difference!  Following on our visit to The Stone House last month Patricia Mirrlees has kindly invited us to walk round her garden.  Tree identification will be the focus of the walk\, looking at leaves\, bark and overall appearance.  A a recent count\, 35 different types of tree were identified in the garden! \nAs usual\, John O’Boyle will lead the walk which starts at 2 pm and will last for about an hour.  It is free; and no need to book – just turn up on the day.  This is a garden walk\, but  we nevertheless advise stout footwear and long trousers; the walk is at participants’ own risk. \nThe Stone House is at 40 MIngle Lane\, opposite the church.  We hope people will walk or cycle\, but if coming by car\, you should be able to park on Gog Magog Way.  Assemble just before 2 pm at the entrance to The Stone House.

SUMMARY:Face to face conversation in a Stapleford garden
DESCRIPTION:  \nWE ARE CORDIALLY INVITED to join Stapleford resident Patricia Mirrlees for a drink and a chat at her home The Stone House\, 40 Mingle Lane\, from 6.30 – 8.00 pm on Wednesday 25 August.  This will be a social occasion at which we can get to know each other\, but we shall also be discussing green issues.  Patricia is particularly interested in how we can work to improve our local environment for wildlife and biodiversity\, be it (for example) by getting councils to reduce verge cutting and allowing grass to grow and planting wildflowers instead; making life easier for insects\, bees and butterflies by planting nectar rich flowers and seldom mowing lawns; and for animals like hedgehogs creating highways by making gaps in garden fences.  Other issues we might discuss are the water crisis or the recent IPCC report – but let’s see where the conversation leads us.  It will be such a luxury not to have a set agenda to work through at speed! \n  \nIf coming by car\, park near the Johnson Hall on Gog Magog Way – the entrance to The Stone House is opposite the church lych gate.  The Stone House has a large garden\, and we shall sit outside.  Patricia will serve soft drinks and tea/coffee. \n  \nWe hope lots of us will be there!  If you can come\, please contact us at the usual address – greengroupssss@gmail.com.  Please let us know by Monday 23 August so Patricia knows how many to expect.
