SUMMARY:What hope for cooks and forests dying in Africa?
DESCRIPTION:This will be a meeting held via Zoom.  Bill Powell  was to have spoken at our April meeting about the need for cleaner and more efficient cooking methods using farm and forestry waste in Uganda\, including demonstrating a stove that he had seen used; but unfortunately the meeting couldn’t go ahead because of the pandemic.  We have now arranged for him to talk to us online and answer questions.\nLockdown didn’t only stop the UK in its tracks\, it also came to Uganda\, with all education closed.  This left an instructor from the main forestry college stuck in Kampala and running out of money.  Benedictor Waniala is an expert on many kinds of biomass stove and suddenly had time to work closely with Bill\, who together with his family paid Benedictor to build ten large efficient family stoves of a kind used in remote areas of Latin America. \nBill will describe some of the  people and cookstove projects he has been involved with in Uganda.  Actual demonstrations of stoves will have to be postponed of course! \n \nTo take part in this meeting\, please email greengroupssss@gmail.com using the heading ‘Africa talk’\, and the Zoom link will be sent to you just before the meeting.  If you haven’t used Zoom before there are tutorials on their website\, or on YouTube.

SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk: Stapleford Parish Pit
DESCRIPTION:A wildflower walk to Stapleford Parish Pit led by 2G3S member John 0’Boyle.  There is uneven ground on the site so sturdy footwear is advised.  There is no charge for this event. \nStapleford Chalk Pit is a small nature reserve adjoining Magog Downs\, managed by a group of Friends under the trusteeship of the Parish Council.  The pit was formed by the extraction of a hard chalk (clunch) for use as a building material and the repair of local roads.  The Friends are working towards improving the rich grassland flora of the site.  70 wildflower species have so far been recorded.  For those who came on this walk last year\, it will be interesting to see how the site has developed. \nAccess: Try to come by foot or bike\, but if you need to drive you can leave your car at the Magog Trust car park and walk back down the road towards Stapleford (note there is a parking charge for non-members of the Magog Trust).  After 200 yards on the left there is a signpost to the Pit just after the Gog Magog Cottages private road.  Walk up the path and meet at the gate at the top.

DESCRIPTION:This is an edited extract from the Circular Cambridge website:  (links in italics) \nOn the last Wednesday of the month\, people in Cambridgeshire can use Zoom to get their broken items seen by an experienced Cambridgeshire Repair Café repairer\, without even leaving their home! \nThe next one is on Wednesday 24 June. \nOver lunchtime\, you’ll be able to ‘bring in’ electricals*\, household and garden items\, bicycles\, toys\, jewellery and clothing for 1:1 repair advice. There’ll be advice on software troubles too. Everything’s being done virtually using Zoom – once in the Cafe you’ll be in themed breakout rooms where you’ll meet your repairer. \nTo take part you’ll need a PC\, tablet or phone that can be used for video calls. The Cambs Virtual Repair Café is free to visit and all aged 18 or over are welcome. \n* We can only see battery powered electrical items at the virtual events\, no mains powered appliances\, sorry. \nBooking a visit the Cambs Virtual Repair Café  \nFor 24 June\, you need to book your item in by midday on 23rd June. All bookers will receive an automatic confirmation email and then a second email with the link to join the Virtual Repair Cafe will be emailed out the day before the event. DESCRIPTION: Go to Information – Useful links for full details\n\n\n\n\n \nThe celebration of ‘Earth Day’ began in the US in 1970 when Gaylord Nelson\, a Democrat Senator and governor of Wisconsin\,  proposed April 22 as a day for Americans to speak out about the environmental crisis.  See him speaking here. \nSince then Earth Day has been observed not only in the US but around the world.  In 2016\, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day when the historic Paris Agreement on climate change was signed into force. \n2020 represents the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day and the theme for this year is climate change.  It is ironic that on the one hand events to mark the day will this year have to be digital because of the coronavirus pandemic (arguably itself a result of our cavalier and exploitative approach to the natural world) while on the other hand environmentalists may be welcoming the fact that the price of American oil has just gone negative for the first time ever. \nFor more information\, and how to get involved\, visit the Earth Day website.

DESCRIPTION:Are natural disasters OUR FAULT? \nMost deaths caused by so-called ‘natural’ disasters have human responsibility behind them.  Floods kill more people every year than all other natural disasters. Yet it is clear that climate change\, primarily caused by burning fossil fuels\, greatly exacerbates the power of storms and floods\, generates long-term droughts\, and causes heat waves that lead to tens of thousands of early deaths.  As always\, it is the poor and disadvantaged who suffer most – particularly those in low-income countries who did not cause the problem in the first place. \nBob White\, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Cambridge\, will lead our discussion on this topical issue. \n8 pm Monday 20 January 2020  \nLarge room\, The Three Horseshoes\, Stapleford \nFree; all welcome!

DESCRIPTION:FOSSIL FUEL DIVESTMENT AND WHY IT MATTERS \n \n8 pm on Tuesday 3 December at the Three Horseshoes\, Stapleford \nBy the end of the last Parliament\, over 300 cross-party MPs were calling on their pension fund to divest from fossil fuels.  Is this enough?  How many other organisations are following suit?  Dr James Smith\, Public Health Consultant\, University of Cambridge\, will lead our discussion on the importance of divestment and whether we are moving quickly enough to have a significant ameliorating effect on climate change. \nAll welcome.

SUMMARY:What went right for 2G3S in 2019?  What do we want from 2020?
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us at The Three Horseshoes\, Stapleford\, on 25 November for our next meeting.  This get-together is in effect our AGM: we shall review all the things we did in 2019:  putting on events (such as talks\, nature walks\, Repair Cafes\, and the Apple Day)\,  sharing information\, and participating in policy formation.  We shall go on to discuss what we shall be doing in 2020.  Are we on the right track?  Should we have more/fewer/different events?  Should we spend more time discussing issues? \nIf you have often thought about finding out more about who we are and what we do\, but somehow never got around to it\, and would like some input into where we go from here\, now is your chance to meet us and join in the discussion.  And if you want to get more involved\, we would love to have you with us\, whether it be as part of the publicity team\, helping out at events\, taking a turn at chairing or minuting meetings\, or doing things from your computer at home. \nThe AGM part of the evening will be kept fairly brief so that we all have a chance to get to know each other over a drink afterwards.  Even our regular members are looking forward to this chance to relax for a change!  This is our end-of-year social – you are most warmly invited!

SUMMARY:2019 - 2020 Conversation Evenings: Climate
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday October 22 at 8 pm in The Rose\, Stapleford \n \nThis year’s 2G3S Conversation Evenings will all be on the theme of the climate crisis. We start off by welcoming Pippa Heylings\, Chair of  South Cambridgeshire District Council Climate and Environment Advisory Committee. \n  \nLast November\, members of all parties at South Cambridgeshire District Council unanimously backed a motion put forward by Pippa proposing that “South Cambs shows responsible climate leadership by supporting the transition to zero carbon by 2050 in the next Local Plan.” This pledge is more ambitious than the Government’s national target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by that date. \n  \nPippa told us “We are facing a climate emergency and have limited time to act. We’re already feeling the effects of climate change in the UK through the increased frequency and intensity of storms\, flooding and heatwaves which are putting extra strains on our services. We’re also experiencing growing problems with water scarcity and air pollution.” \n  \nThis open conversation evening will be a chance to discuss how South Cambridgeshire and its parishes can ensure that new homes\, jobs and services will support this commitment to making South Cambridgeshire Carbon-neutral by 2050. \n  \nJoin us for a drink and some interesting but informal discussion!  We’ll be in the small room to the left of the main entrance. \n

DESCRIPTION:2G3S Apple Day\, Wandlebury\, 1 – 4 pm Saturday 5 October 2019 \n \nWe held a successful Apple Day with Cambridge Past\, Present and Future and Orchards East at Wandlebury on Saturday 5 October. Activities included: \n\nGuided walks around the Wandlebury Orchard\nFruit and nut identification\n\n \n\nTalk on the care of fruit trees\nApple juicing\nTalk on cooking with apples – samples and recipes\nTalk on cider making\nArchery for adults (and soft archery for children)\n\n \n\nThe Cambridgeshire Beekeepers’ Association [CBKA] with information about all pollinators and a glass observation beehive\nActivities for children\, including crafts and games\, and story reading by well-known children’s author ISABEL THOMAS\ninformation about local environmental and horticultural groups\n\n \nThe weather was kind to us on the day; unfortunately the season hadn’t been a good one for apples and the juicers got off to a rather slow start!  But all in all a very enjoyable afternoon.

SUMMARY:Nature Walk at Dernford Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:2G3S nature walk at Dernford Reservoir\, Stapleford\n \nOur next local nature walk will be around Dernford Reservoir on Saturday 14 September 2019 between 2-3 pm.  The reservoir area was opened for public access last year following amelioration of the former gravel quarry.  There is a meadow flora around the reservoir and some interesting bird life including Goosander\, Great-crested Grebe\, Tufted Duck and a pair of Common Terns on the small island.  Meet at the car park next to the reservoir off Cambridge Road just south of the village (Map reference TL471511).  Sturdy footwear is advised.

SUMMARY:Nature Walk to Nine Wells
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of the Stapleford Parish Pit walk earlier this month\, 2G3S is arranging a visit to the Nine Wells reserve on 29 June. The name refers to the number of chalk springs that act as the source for Hobson’s Conduit. Once again our guide is John O’Boyle\, who will discuss the interesting flora and fauna of this woodland reserve and also its historic and geological importance. \nAssemble at the noticeboard at the western entrance to the reserve. As before\, sturdy footwear is advised. \nNote: there is no car parking near to the site but it can be reached via a public footpath from Granham’s Road\, or via permissive paths from Foster Road or Granham’s Road and the National Cycle Network path that runs between Shelford/Addenbrookes (the DNA path). \nFurther details of the reserve\, including location\, can be found here: \nhttp://www.cambsgeology.org/565-2-2 \n

DESCRIPTION:Representatives from Anglian Water are coming along to talk to us about how they operate\, what issues they face\, and the campaigns they run. Among other things they will cover: \n\nwhere our water comes from\, how plentiful or otherwise it is\, and how to save water\nhow to dispose of waste down the sink or toilet wisely so that we don’t pollute our waterways with corrosive liquids\, poisons\, fats\, solid waste such as wet wipes\, etc\nthe use of ‘grey water’ in new housing\, and whether there is any scope for modifying existing domestic water supplies to make use of waste water\n\nThey are interested in feedback from us\, so come along with your questions and let us know what your concerns are.  This is a free event.
