SUMMARY:Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join me for a walk around the Nine Wells nature reserve from 2 p.m. on 22nd July to observe the interesting flora and fauna of this woodland site.  Nine Wells is of historic and geological importance as the chalk springs act as the source for Hobson’s Conduit and traditional water supply to Cambridge. \nAs usual stout footwear is advised and also long trousers as a precaution against any nettle/brambles.  Sun protection is also advised if appropriate and water if it’s a hot day.  Our Nature Walks are intended to raise awareness of local wildlife sites and associated fauna and flora. Participants are welcome to share their knowledge. All walks are at attendees own risk. \nAssemble at the noticeboard at the western entrance to the reserve. \nNote: there is no car parking near to the site but it can be reached via a public footpath from Granham’s Road or the National Cycle Network path that runs between Shelford/Addenbrookes (the DNA path). \nFurther details of the reserve\, including location\, can be found at https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/nine-wells-local-nature-reserve.

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe at the Shelford Rugby Club
DESCRIPTION:This event will include the Repair Café and also a SWISH clothes swap. \nLATEST NEWS (Tuesday 11th July): \nBookings have now closed.    However\, we do have some spare capacity to take a look at items (of all types) brought in on the day without a booking.  And of course there are no bookings needed for the SWISH.   If you do intend to bring an item for repair that is not booked in\, it is best if you arrive after 2:15  PM.\n \nFor the Repair Café\, bring along your broken item and a skilled volunteer will help you fix it!  We can tackle a wide variety of repairs including jewellery\, clothes and fabrics\, electrical and electronic devices\, sewing machines and other items.  Please note that we will not be able to replace cracked screens on phones or tablets. The repairers are brilliant and can fix a lot of things but there are no guarantees. \n(If you have a bicycle which needs attention\, you can bring it to one of the weekly Dr Bike workshops held each Tuesday afternoon from 3pm – 6pm at the Old Slaughterhouse on Church Street in Stapleford). \nPlease book your item in from Friday 23rd June until Sunday 9th July (extended to 10th July)\, via the following link: \nBooking Form – Great Shelford Rugby Club Repair Café \nBooking is highly recommended to avoid a long wait on the day\, and to make things fair we politely request only one item per person.  We ask all repairees to read and sign our repair agreement as we are all volunteers. \nE-waste: You can also bring along small electrical items like kettles or cables that are obsolete or beyond repair and recycle them in our e-waste bin. DESCRIPTION:Join me for an informal local nature walk around Dernford Reservoir on Saturday 18th March between 2-4 pm. \nThe reservoir area has public access following amelioration of the former gravel quarry. There is a meadow flora around the reservoir and some interesting bird life. Meet at 2 p.m. at the car park next to the reservoir off Cambridge Road just south of the village (Map reference TL471511). As you come out of Stapleford on the Cambridge Road you will see the Rose pub restaurant on the left. Continue over the road bridge and take the first right up the former quarry service road. Continue for 250m and the small car park is on the right. \nSturdy footwear is advised and appropriate attire for the weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:In February we will be discussing ‘Regenesis’ by George Monbiot\, who attended the Cambridge Literary Festival recently to discuss the issues raised in this book. \nAs usual with George Monbiot\, this is a well-argued and challenging book.  The depth and breadth of his research is impressive\, and yet the book is very readable with the serious stuff being leavened with anecdote and humour.  His conclusions\, and their implications\, are both shocking and inspiring.  Do come and find out more\, whether or not you have already read the book – you’ll certainly want to afterwards! \nIf you want to join us at Book Club please send an email to 2G3S with “Book Club” in the title (so we can let you know of any changes and future events). \nVenue:  The Rose\, Stapleford.

DESCRIPTION:LATEST NEWS:  31st January \nWe have closed the booking system earlier than advertised due to the high level of booking requests. \nWe will not be able to accept any further electrical or electronic repairs at this event.   We have some scope to accept walk-ins for fabric or clothing repairs\,  jewellery\, and other repairs NOT involving electrics or electronics.  Please bear in mind that if you do not have a confirmed booking you may have to wait a while for a repairer to become available. \n  \nBring along your broken item and a skilled volunteer will help you fix it! \nWe can tackle a wide variety of repairs including clothes and fabrics\, electrical items\, jewellery and other items*. We may be able to accept some items on the day\, but please note that for electrical repairs in particular it is better to book in advance. (Please note that we will not be able to replace cracked screens on phones or tablets). \n*If you have a bicycle which needs attention\, you can bring it to one of our weekly Dr Bike workshops held at the Old Slaughterhouse on Church Street in Stapleford. DESCRIPTION:Our next book/books are ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson / ‘Silent Spring Revisited’ by Conor Mark Jameson.  ‘Silent Spring’ needs no introduction; it was a seminal work when it was published in 1962 and was a major factor in the banning of DDT some years later.  The second book was published in 2012\, and focuses on what happened to particularly birds in the 50 years after Silent Spring was published. \nWe have been meeting in The Rose\, Stapleford\, but this pub is currently closed\, so we are meeting at The Three Horseshoes\, Church Street\, Stapleford.  We have booked their private room for 8 pm. \nDo come along having read both\, either\, or neither!  If you know you are coming\, please email us at greengroupssss@gmail.com so that we can contact you if necessary.  If you have decided at the last minute\, check the website first for any last minute amendments.

SUMMARY:Wednesday 2 November Strategic Planning meeting
DESCRIPTION:A message from our convenor\, Claire Lord \n  \nWatching the news this Summer I’ve seen reports of record breaking temperatures\, widespread drought\, horrific ‘mega’ wildfires and floods of truly tragic proportions. I’ve felt grief\, worry\, frustration and helplessness. \n  \nA large source of solace for me in these times is knowing that I am not alone in these feelings\, and there are things that I can do to help.  I joined 2G3S because I benefit from meeting other people who share my concerns\, and who can give me ideas of what I can do in my own home to live more sustainably.  I also enjoy joining with others to try and have a positive influence on a wider scale.  The benefit of synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. \n  \n2G3S is a friendly and informal group where visitors and new members are always welcome.  Sometimes people just come along because they are interested in a particular topic\, or would like to join in on a more regular basis. \n  \nIn November we are having a ‘Strategic Planning Meeting’ where we will discuss themes such as what issues we feel we should be working on as a group\, and how we are achieving our mission statement. From there we will brainstorm some ideas of what we would like to do next year. It is an open meeting and all are welcome\, even if you have never met us before! \n  \nSo\, if you fancy getting involved in a Repair Cafe\, discussing ideas on how to reduce single use plastic\, rewilding a garden\, planning a campaign or just listening in to the discussion – come along and join us and input your thoughts and ideas. \n  \nWe’re meeting on Wednesday 2nd November\, at 8pm in Cox’s Close Community Room\, Stapleford. SUMMARY:Nature Walk Saturday 29 October (note change of date)
DESCRIPTION:2G3S nature walk at Dernford Reservoir Saturday 29 October   \nJoin me for our final informal local nature walk of the year around Dernford Reservoir on Saturday 29 October between 2-4 pm.  The reservoir area was opened for public access following amelioration of the former gravel quarry.  There is a meadow flora around the reservoir and some interesting bird life including Goosander\, Great-crested Grebe\, Tufted Duck and Common Terns on the small island.  Meet at 2 pm at the car park next to the reservoir off Cambridge Road just south of the village (Map reference TL471511).  As you come out of Stapleford on the Cambridge Road travelling towards Sawston you will see the Rose pub restaurant on the left.  Continue over the road bridge and take the first right up the former quarry service road.  Continue for 250m and the small car park is on the right. \nSturdy footwear is advised and appropriate attire for the weather condtions.  Note these walks are intended to raise awareness of our local wildlife sites and open to all\, though you attend at your own risk. \nJohn O’Boyle
