2G3S Book Club: the end of agriculture as we know it?

Our next meeting is scheduled for the evening of Thursday 23rd February at 7.30 in The Rose, Stapleford. We will be discussing “Regenesis” by George Monbiot, who recently attended the Cambridge Literary Festival to talk about the issues he raises in this book.

Monbiot reviews in depressing detail the problems for the biosphere, and potentially for human life on earth, brought about by our current ways of feeding ourselves. But then he tells us about new developments, notably a system of cultivating bacteria known as Precision Fermentation, which could replace both animal and some plant protein and open the door to a bright and sustainable future.

There are opportunities but also challenges resultant on these discoveries. And how likely is it to happen? Plenty to talk about! If you want to understand some of the arguments and haven’t time to read the book, you can instead watch this recording of a presentation recently given to the Cambridge University Alt Protein Project by Joel Scott-Halkes of the RePlanet organisation.

Intrigued? If you want to join us, please send an email to 2G3S with “Book Club” in the title. We look forward to seeing you there!

Venue:  The Rose, Stapleford – meet at 7:30pm.
